|  "Tangier" (After Marshall D. Smith)

A cloaked man ascends a steep road in the warm afternoon light in front of Moroccan buildings bathed in light. A small group of figures look on from a short distance, relaxing in the shade. The color scheme is warm, with beige, brown, blue-greens and light blue.

This is a reproduction of an original painting by Marshall D. Smith, who was a Chicago artist and a great uncle through marriage. The original hung in my Grandmother's house for as long as I can remember. As a child, I was inspired by the warm light and far-away mystery it conjured. After travelling through Morocco in my early 20s, this image became even more important to me. It sat like a shared memory on their wall, pulling me in. When my Grandmother passed away, before the house was sold, I took photos of the image to work from. I don't know the original's title.
